Hermann Pattberg (b. 1846 – d. 1918) was the son of Johann Wilhelm Padberg (b. December 19, 1809, in Werden and Gertrud Volman (b. March 17, 1817). Johann Wilhelm and Gertrud had seven children, three sons and four daughters. For some reason, the three sons were given the surname spelling of Pattberg while the daughters were all baptized with the surname spelled Padberg. Two sons died in infancy. Hermann survived to adulthood. In 1874 he married Marie Louise Schmitz (b. February 18, 1848). They immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1881. Hermann is Branch U. Hermann worked initially in the coal mine in Pennsylvania, but eventually, because of asthma, he had to leave his job. They moved to Arkansas where they farmed. Two daughters, Christina and Minnie remained in Pennsylvania. Christina later moved to Highland, Illinois. The six children of Hermann and Mary Louise are: Henry; Christina (1875-1934) married to Otto Kast; Wilhelmina (Minnie) (1878-1936) married to Edward Allen; Hermann (1879-1953) who also moved to Highland, Illinois; Mary Barbara (1884-1973) who married Jacob Stoll; and Frederick William (1889-1908).

Hermann’s sister, the second child of Johann Wilhelm and Gertrud was Anna Catharina Padberg, (b. April 11, 1841). She married Wilhelm Weller. They had 5 children, four sons and one daughter. Their family emigrated and became Branch V.
